If you have a job that requires hours of sitting in the same place, it can be incredibly hard on your body. From causing weight gain and anxiety to muscle strain and weakness, it’s important to focus on using and stretching your muscles, even when you’re stuck behind a desk. A massage therapist can maximize the health benefits of stretching. In the meantime, here are three of the best stretching exercises office workers can perform every day with minimal effort.

Stretches You Can Do Without Leaving Your Desk

1. Chin Tuck

Sometimes, staring into a computer screen for long periods of time can cause eye strain, stiff neck muscles, and sore shoulders. To soothe all of these problems, try closing your eyes and tucking your chin down as low as possible. While facing forward, tuck your chin to your chest, relax, and repeat.

2. Chest Stretches

massage therapistIf long hours of typing have strained your upper back, chest, shoulders, and arms, perform some chest stretches. By holding your hands together at the wrist and reaching your arms forward as far as possible, you can relax your upper body. To get even more out of chest stretches, hold your opposing arm by the elbow and reach it across your chest. Repeat these movements periodically throughout the workday.

3. Seated Leg Stretches

Sitting in a chair doesn’t mean you can’t move your legs. Focus on stretching out your calfs, quads, and hamstrings while you talk on the phone or type. By scooting to the edge of your seat, you can even get into a partial runner’s pose. In addition to focusing on walking places around the office as much as possible, ask your massage therapist to focus on your legs to improve circulation and reduce pain from being stationary.
