If you’re looking for a distinctive type of decoration for your exterior or interior walls, consider sgraffito. This ornamental plaster effect has a rich history and can add a unique old-world flair to your building. Learn more below about this classic technique and how it can beautify your home or building.

Understanding Sgraffito

What Is Sgraffito?

The term sgraffito comes from the Italian word graffiare, meaning to scratch. It is an ornamental plaster technique that creates unique designs through the use of layering. In addition to enhancing plaster walls, the method has been adapted frequently in other art forms such as pottery and painting.

How Is the Effect Produced?

Sgraffito is achieved by applying layers of plaster in contrasting colors to a dampened surface. Parts of the top layer are then methodically scratched away, revealing the contrasting layer beneath to create a pattern or image. The plastering contractor needs to possess the proper skill and experience to execute the effect in a timely manner, as the upper layer of plaster must be scraped away before it hardens.

Why Is Sgraffito Significant?

From Italy, the popularity of this ornamental plaster style spread throughout southern and northern Europe and then into Africa and the Middle East. The technique experienced a revival around the turn of the 20th century, particularly in the Art Nouveau movement.
