If you notice soap scum on laundry, dishes, or your skin after bathing, hard water could be to blame. The liquid contains high levels of magnesium and calcium, minerals that make it difficult for soap and detergents to dissolve. The particles can also accumulate in drain lines and pipes, leading to major clogs. To prevent these issues, many homeowners choose to install water softeners. Knowing more about how the appliance removes hard minerals will make it easier to identify and resolve minor issues before water quality is compromised.

How Do Water Softeners Work?

Hard Water Passes Through a Mineral Tank

water softenerWater softeners are typically installed close to the main water line. This ensures the liquid is directed to the device for treatment before flowing to the rest of the house. Hard water filters through a mineral tank containing negatively charged polystyrene beads, or resin. Calcium and magnesium in the liquid are positively charged and stick to the beads.

Calcium & Magnesium Are Replaced With Other Positively Charged Ions

A process called ion exchange occurs while hard water is in the mineral tank. The calcium and magnesium ions are replaced with sodium or potassium ions, which also carry positive charges. When these ions enter the water supply, the liquid is then released through pipes to plumbing fixtures throughout the house.

The Water Softener Flushes Out the Unwanted Substances

When the resin beads fully absorb the calcium and magnesium, the regenerating process begins. During the backwash stage, the water changes course to remove dirt inside the mineral tank. Next, a salt solution in a separate brine tank is pumped into the mineral container. The sodium in the solution replaces the calcium and magnesium on the resin beads. The remaining brine solution and minerals are then flushed from the mineral tank and the brine tank is refilled for the next regeneration cycle.
