When you have a backyard, one of the best ways to enjoy the space is to have a fully furnished patio. You can take in a meal, entertain guests, or just lounge around and relax. If you have a covered patio, it’s important to have furniture coverings to protect it from the winter weather.

A Guide to Patio Coverings

Why You Need a Covering

Although patio furniture is built to withstand the outdoors, they’re not indestructible. Ideally, during winter, they should be brought into the house, garage, or shed. While a covered patio guards against rain, snow, and UV rays, you need something that sits closer to the individual piece of furniture. Coverings protect them directly from freezing temperatures, harsh winds, and excessive moisture.

What Options Are Available

Icovered patiof you already have a covered patio, you can generally get away with a water-resistant covering. These will repel water, but if there’s too much rain or snow, the moisture will eventually permeate the fabric. If you don’t have something overhead or it's latticed, you’ll need to invest in a fully waterproof one. These are designed to prevent any air or moisture from seeping in, so no matter how much water or snow falls, the furniture will be safe.

Ventilation is Important

As protective as waterproof coverings are, the lack of breathability makes it easy for mildew to grow. To prevent this, look for products with strategically-designed vents sewn in. Alternatively, if you live in an area where the winters are mild and there’s no snow, remove the coverings when the weather permits to air out the furniture. Just make sure to check the forecast.
