Buying your first home is an exciting milestone, but it can also be overwhelming. However, with the right real estate agent and resources, you can start the search from an informed place. The following tips can get you on the right track from the start.

Basic Tips for First-Time Homebuyers

Get Pre-Approved for a Loan

Before you even start the home hunting process, know what you can afford. This will help narrow down the search and avoid disappointment when a home is outside of your budget. Research mortgage options and get pre-approved so you can not only negotiate with confidence but submit an offer before others have the opportunity.

Hire an Experienced Real Estate Agent

A quality agent will truly get to know your needs and be available for questions, so don’t settle until finding someone that makes you comfortable and will be your fiduciary.  Stay within your comfort zone, which may be different than what you qualify for, when you start looking.  You control whether you can find something to meet your expectations before changing your price range.

Know Where to Compromise

Start the home search with a list of all your priorities. This could include details like the number of bedrooms, size of the yard, and specific neighborhood. Then consider what you are willing to compromise on. For example, if a home has an ideal layout, you might not mind that the kitchen is a touch small. You may also be willing to justify increasing the price if the house checks off all the boxes.

Start the Search Early

By rushing through the home search, you might put an offer on a house that you later regret. Therefore, start early and view as many properties as necessary so it doesn't feel like you're settling, but like you're coming home.  Remember, sometimes you don’t know what you want before you know what you don’t want.
