Geothermal systems are an efficient method of heating and cooling a home using the constant temperature of the earth — typically about 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on your location. They are a type of heat pump, but unlike traditional units, they don’t run into trouble heating homes in cold winter temperatures. Here’s what you should know about geothermal systems and why they’re a reliable source for heating and cooling your home.

How Do Geothermal Systems Work?

With geothermal systems, long loops of pipe are buried in the ground, and a refrigerant is pumped through the pipes to absorb heat energy from the earth. During winter, when the refrigerant returns from below ground, this warmth is collected using a device called a heat exchanger. Collected warmth from the heat exchanger — which can reach well over 100 degrees in many cases — is then transferred into the home.

georthermalIn the summertime, the system works in reverse, collecting warm air from inside the house and transferring it into the ground, where it’s cooled. Geothermal systems are very energy efficient because they don’t create heat — they simply move it around to where it's needed, or away from where it’s not wanted.

Why Are Geothermal Systems Effective in Winter?

Unlike traditional heat pumps, which aren’t reliable in very cold weather, geothermal systems work well in winter. If a traditional heat pump is dealing with sub-freezing, outdoor temperatures, the indoor temperature differential is simply too great to overcome. This uses a lot of energy and makes it hard to consistently heat your home. With geothermal, the "outdoor" temperatures never drop below about 50 degrees — or the constant temperature of the earth in your region — and the heat exchanger can easily collect enough warmth from the ground to raise indoor temperatures to comfortable levels.
