Spending time on your boat can be a fun activity for most of the year, but once winter hits, you’ll need to prepare it for the harsh weather. It’s not enough to simply cover it with a tarp and call it a day. The following guide will help you make sure your boat is in pristine condition come spring.

Tips to Prepare Your Boat for the Winter

Check for Signs of Damage

You should have any watercraft repairs done before the winter to prevent the damage from worsening over the winter; this will save you time and money. Inspect your boat for stress cracks, particularly around the hull. If you notice any serious cracks, consult with a professional. Additionally, you should look for barnacles, dirt, and sea scum stuck to your watercraft; scrape and power-wash these away to keep your boat in good condition.

Perform Preventative Maintenance

boatsIt’s better to prevent damage in the first place than to make repairs. Add a stabilizer to the fuel and turn the motor on for 10 minutes to care for the engine. In addition, you should change the oil in the spring and fall, and spray the engine’s cylinders with a fogging-solution lubricant to prevent corrosion and moisture buildups. If your boat has an inboard or stern-drive motor, you should drain it to prevent any water inside from turning into ice, which can cause cracks.
