You’re invited to a dinner at a swanky hotel. The invitation didn’t provide details on the attire preference. Will a tuxedo be too formal? Or, can a tailored business suit pass inspection? For men’s clothing, social dress codes can be hard to pin down. The good news is, there are several guidelines that can help narrow down choices and ensure you’re not over -or under-dressed. Here are some helpful codes to keep in mind for your next special event.

3 Dress Codes Used for Men’s Clothing

1. Business Attire

If you see “business attire” on the invitation, dark colors are the safest choice. Solid black or blue jackets and pants are effortless options. You can even go with pinstripes if they’re subtle and formal. Steer clear of colorful dress shirts and flashy ties. For business gatherings, wear a crisp, white shirt and an understated tie. Keep the shoes and socks dressy and black to complete the look.

2. Formal

This men’s clothing code is considered the highest caliber of dressing. It typically includes a tuxedo with a vest and tailcoat and, in some classes, white gloves and a top hat. If formal attire is requested, you’ve likely been invited to an annual soiree such as a stately dinner hosted by high-ranking officials. It’s also likely that you may need to rent most of the clothing items to be properly attired.

3. Semi-Formal

men's clothingWeddings and proms are the common settings for semi-formal wear. A traditional black tuxedo with black bow tie and cummerbund are traditional options. The color black is usually reserved for evening affairs. There is much more flexibility with color choice for daytime wear.

4. Business Casual

Lunches with colleagues or gatherings at company conferences often call for business casual attire. The standards are typically khaki or gray pants, a navy blue blazer, dress shirt, and no tie. Jeans, even darker, dressier styles, are risky when meeting with potential clients. Avoid them if possible. Shoes and socks should be the kind you wear with a business suit.
