4 Tips to Prepare Your Wheelchair or Scooter for Winter, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin

Whether it’s running errands to the grocery store or visiting friends and family, getting to the places you need to go in winter weather can be more challenging when you use a wheelchair or scooter. Luckily, there are many ways you can prepare your transportation for snowy and icy conditions to make accessibility a little easier. Below are a few easy steps to take.

4 Ways to Get Your Wheelchair or Scooter Winter Ready

1. Get Your Transportation Serviced

If your wheelchair or scooter hasn’t been serviced in a while, consider scheduling an appointment to have it evaluated. Plunging temperatures and winter moisture can impact the power source of your scooter, causing them to act up or short out. If you generally store your scooter in a garage or other unheated location, find somewhere to put it inside to protect the motor.

2. Have Back-Up Power

Your mobility device requires full power to function properly, so it’s important to not only have the right source, but the accessories needed to recharge. Make sure you have backup sources at all times in case you lose power at home and cannot recharge.

3. Purchase Snow Tires

wheelchairWhile your mobility device may not be as heavy-duty as a vehicle, it can still benefit from being equipped with snow tires. These tires have a deeper tread, which helps the rubber grip the surface of the street, sidewalk, or floor and displaces more snow and slush. With more stable tires, it will be a little easier to make it through a snowy patch.

4. Plan Ahead

Ice and snow storms can develop quickly, making it difficult for you to rush out to the store to get the items you need. During winter, try to keep your prescriptions filled and your pantry stocked to ensure you are covered for a winter storm. If this isn’t possible, look into delivery options or mail prescriptions to allow you to get the important items you need if you can’t make it out of the house.
