Watersports are an essential part of the Hawaii experience, from kayaking to surfing to stand-up paddleboarding. The latter is a great pick for watersport amateurs, but it can also offer a challenge for experienced surfers. If you’re new to this activity, there are a few tips that can make the learning process easier. Follow them and you’ll be controlling your paddleboard like a professional in no time.

3 Paddleboard Tips for Beginners

1. Choose the Right Board

Trying to follow all the right steps and keep your balance at the same time can be challenging, which is why all-around boards are recommended for beginners. They’re shorter and thicker, which will help you keep your balance as you learn all the other tips for paddleboards.

2. Start Small

paddle boardYou might feel inclined to take on more than you can handle. You can overexert yourself and end up in situations that you’re not prepared for, including exhausting your energy, falling more often, and potentially pulling a leg muscle. Instead, start slow to preserve your energy for the duration of the lesson. If you need to start on your knees or in calm water, don’t be embarrassed. This is part of the learning process.

3. Learn How to Fall Well

To minimize the risk of injury when you fall, try to land away from your board parallel to the water. Then tread water next to your board as you grab the carry handles and kick hard to push yourself back onto the board. It’s normal to fall several times before you stand up for the first time, so give yourself a break and have fun with the lesson.
