PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is a procedure used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. If your eye doctor has recommended that you get this surgery or you’re considering talking to them about it, then you should know some facts about this procedure and what to expect. This will help you have an educated discussion with your doctor as you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

Introduction to PRK Eye Surgery

How the Procedure Works

The entire procedure typically takes less than ten minutes. Your ophthalmologist will begin by numbing the eye with a topical anesthetic. They’ll then remove the thin outer layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, using a laser, an alcohol solution or a blunt surgical instrument. They’ll then use a UV laser to reshape the curve of the cornea as needed to adjust the vision. They’ll apply bandage contact lenses on the cornea to protect the eye while it heals for the next five to seven days. Your vision may be blurry within the first few weeks, after which you’ll be ready to drive safely. Patients experience their best vision after six weeks to six months.

What to Expect After the Surgery

prkPRK laser surgery has similar results as LASIK, though it has been in use for much longer. Also, unlike LASIK, it’s suitable for patients who have a thin cornea. Many patients get 20/20 vision after their procedure. If patients still need to wear a prescription after their surgery, their prescription will be much lower than it was beforehand. People over the age of 40 will still likely need to wear reading glasses, due to age-related vision loss called presbyopia.
