Once known as the fuse box, the circuit breaker panel functions as the main electrical power distribution source for your home’s circuits. Modern homes generally feature circuit breakers with 200-amp capacities. If your home is older and the breaker offers only 60 or 100 amps, have a licensed electrician install a replacement, or you may experience tripping often. Here is a breakdown of what you need to know about circuit breakers to help you deal with tripping.

The Reason for So Many Switches

The two vertical rows of switches on your breaker connect to different circuits throughout your home. One switch connects to a 15-amp circuit powering upstairs light outlets, for example, while another connects to a 20-amp circuit responsible for the electricity in your kitchen. The variety of switches and subsequent circuits accommodate different wattage needs throughout your home since appliances and lights have varying voltage capacities.

Reasons for Tripped Breakers

electriciansCircuit breakers trip, or shut off, when they become overloaded, such as when too many high-wattage appliances are plugged into one outlet or when a powerful appliance is plugged into an outlet that doesn’t have enough amp capacity. Other reasons for tripped breakers include loose or damaged wiring that result in short circuits. If a wire heats up from running too much current, its insulation can melt, letting the current escape the wire and even cause a house fire.

Tips for Resetting

Resetting your tripped circuit breaker takes little time or effort. Open the panel and look for the switch in the “off” position. Turn off any lights or appliances that circuit controls before flipping the switch back to the “on” position to regain power. Depending on your panel type, you may need to shut the affected switch completely off before turning it back on. Call an electrician if the power to that circuit immediately shuts off after you have fixed it.
