In construction, fill materials are used to restore excavated sites and holes to flat ground, and different materials offer varying benefits such as stabilization and water flow. Stone is a popular fill material that provides those benefits, but certain stone grades serve different purposes. Here is information on some common stone options so you know which one will work for your needs the next time you speak with your aggregate distributor or stone and gravel suppliers.

What Stone Options Are Available for Fill Materials?

1. Limestone Screening

For projects that involve piping, sewer excavation, or similar processes, limestone screening may need to be at the top of your list for fill material. It’s created by crushing and then grinding limestone, forming aggregate made of limestone dust and small pieces. Also called FA5, limestone screening, in particular, is an ideal choice for those types of projects because it presses down easily for good compaction — providing stability while still allowing for some drainage.

2. Grade 8 & Trench Back-Fill

fill materialsThough these are two different materials, they’re similar in composition and purpose. Grade 8 fill, or CA6, is commonly used as a base before laying asphalt roads, but it can be handy for backfill, too. Made of crushed limestone, it contains large chunks of stone mixed with smaller pieces. Trench back-fill contains larger chunks of stone, and there may be a higher percentage of smaller aggregate in the mixture. Both aggregates provide sturdy compaction and draining properties, and they tend to be resistant to the growth of weeds.

3. 3” Stone

One of the largest grades of stone you can get from an aggregate distributor, this backfill material is best for large excavation projects, such as foundations. Because the aggregate pieces are so large, it allows for superior drainage throughout the excavated site. If the drainage is excessive but you need to quickly fill a large space, smaller grades of aggregate can be applied in a thin layer on top to improve compaction and stifle some of the water flow.
