A cataract is a clouding of your eye’s lens. This condition impacts 24.5 million Americans and is a leading cause of blindness. However, an eye doctor can usually perform cataract surgery in order to restore vision. If your ophthalmologist has recommended this form of eye surgery, here’s some additional information on what to expect.

What to Expect From Cataract Surgery

Why Is This Surgery Performed?

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that’s performed in order to restore one’s vision due to cloudiness. By undergoing this surgery, patients will see a reduction in blurred vision and glare, the primary symptoms of cataracts. In turn, you’ll be able to drive, walk, and perform daily activities with added safety.

How Do You Prepare for It?

cataract surgeryTo prepare for your surgery, you’ll meet with your eye doctor in advance so they can take a painless ultrasound of your eye to measure its shape and size. This will help them determine the right artificial lens with which to replace your existing one. Leading up to surgery day, you may be asked to stop taking certain medications, use eye drops to prevent infection, or to fast for 12 hours leading up to your appointment.

What Happens During Surgery?

Your cataract surgery will begin with the doctor putting drops in your eye to dilate your pupil. Next, you’ll be given a local anesthetic to numb the area and a sedative to keep you relaxed. The clouded lens will be removed using an ultrasonic probe. Once removed, it will be replaced with an artificial lens implant. Most patients are able to go home the same day; however, since you’ll be under sedation immediately after surgery, you’ll need someone to drive you home. Because your vision may be blurry for a few days after the treatment, you may also need someone to help you around the house with daily activities.
