Whether it's a juicy roast turkey or crunchy pecan pie, you can likely name your favorite holiday food without hesitation. If you wear braces, however, beware that your dish of choice may not be compatible with orthodontics. Before you dig into this year’s festive feast, check out this list of potentially damaging dishes to avoid.

5 Foods That Are Harmful for Braces

1. Nuts

Biting down on a hard walnut or almond is a quick way to damage metal braces. Make sure there are no nuts hidden in side dishes like stuffing. When it comes to desserts, use nut extract to get the flavor you want without endangering your orthodontics.

2. Popcorn

A holiday movie complete with a bowl of popcorn is a common tradition for many families. If you wear braces, husks can get stuck between wires and brackets, which can be impossible to remove without the help of an orthodontist. Instead, opt for cubes of cheese or “puffcorn” products made without kernels or husks.

3. Caramel

bracesCaramel is extremely sticky and tough to clean off teeth. Trying to pry it off braces is not only difficult, but it will also likely loosen wires. Skip caramel-coated desserts and opt for soft pies—like peanut butter or pumpkin—to satiate your sweet tooth.

4. Turkey

You don’t have to forego this main dish altogether, but you should approach it with caution. Choose white meat, which isn’t as stringy and won’t get caught in braces, and don’t try to tear tough skin with your teeth. Finally, never eat off the bone, which can dislodge brackets.

5. Crunchy Fruits & Vegetables

From carrots to apples, these crispy items might be good for your health, but they are bad news for braces. Look for soft sides like mashed potatoes and yams to complement your meal.
