Driving your own vehicle is the most convenient way to get around town. But you can't cruise around if you don't have your license. Whether you’re trying to get your first driver's license or your current license isn’t valid in your new location, a good driving school will help you pass your driving test. Here's a rundown on what you need and how to set a schedule for your exam.

What You Need to Do Before Taking a Driving Test

You will first need to complete a five-hour pre-licensing course. This is a DMV-approved, standardized course designed to teach some of the basics to become a responsible driver. You can take the course by enrolling in a driving school.

New drivers should also secure the appropriate number of supervised driving practice. All drivers are recommended to have at least 50 hours of practice, including a minimum of 15 hours night driving and 10 hours driving in moderate to heavy traffic.

How to Schedule a Driving Test

You can then set a date for your test online or over the phone via your state’s scheduling system. The process will also require you to submit personal information, which may include your 9-digit CID # (learner's permit number). This is found on the front of your permit. You will also be asked for the area you would like to take your test. Next, you’ll need to select the exact date and time you’d like to take the test from the available openings. Appointment times are added regularly, so if you can't find a feasible schedule today, check again tomorrow.
