Hardwood floors last a lifetime with minimal maintenance, making the flooring suitable for a variety of households. The grain also becomes deeper and richer with age, enhancing the overall beauty and value of homes. Proper installation is the key to longevity, which is why you should hire a professional. Knowing what to expect will make it easier to prepare your home for the project.

What Happens During Hardwood Floor Installation?

All Items Are Removed From Room(s)

Before the technicians arrive, make sure to remove all furniture, area rugs, and additional belongings from the existing floor. Contractors need to measure the perimeter of the room, locate joints, remove baseboards, and check the substrate before getting started. Clearing the area removes any obstacles in the way and prevents damage to your possessions. Set window treatments and wall art aside, too, as it will keep sawdust off the items during the sanding and finishing process.

Wooden Planks Are Left to Acclimate

hardwood floorsAll hardwood planks have a moisture content, which might not match the humidity levels in your space. The wood needs time to adjust to the new climate, so planks, slats, and baseboards should be left in the room for a few days before installation. Without achieving the desired moisture balance, the hardwood floors will expand and contract, leading to uneven areas, cupping, and buckling issues after the materials are nailed or stapled down.

Stay Off Floors Until Completely Dry

After the planks are secured, the contractor will sand the floors and apply a finish. From wax to water-based polyurethane, products come with various tints to match your preferences. After the coating is applied, stay off the floor until it is completely dry. The technician will give an accurate timeline. When placing furniture back in the room, put throw rugs at entrances and felt pads on the bottom of furniture. This will prevent discoloration and additional damage.
