As much as 80 percent of the American population will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Given this high number, understand how to handle back-related issues. This type of pain is often relentless, and it doesn't let up even when the sufferer needs to get some rest. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to sleep more comfortably when dealing with back discomfort.

Back Pain? 3 Tips for Deep Sleep

1. Don't Use a Pillow

Most people consider their pillows as essential to sleep as their mattress, sheets, and blankets. But forgoing the pillow actually helps the back naturally extend, making sleep much more comfortable when experiencing a bout of back pain. It may initially feel awkward to sleep without a pillow, but you’ll find that your pain is lessened upon waking in the morning.

2. Sleep on Your Back

back painIf you normally sleep on your side, try sleeping on your back. By positioning as flat as possible against the mattress, there’s less pressure on your spine. Sleeping on the stomach can also exacerbate pain by curving the back or maneuvering it into uncomfortable, unsupported positions.

3. Support Your Spine With an Insert Pillow

An insert pillow is any small pillow that can fit comfortably under your knees while reclined on your back. By raising and supporting the knees, the spine can achieve a more neutral stance, alleviating pressure. If there’s still space between your lower back and the bed, try positioning a thin cushion or folded towel under the small of your back. Aim to give as much support as possible without overtaxing the spine or forcing it into unnatural positions.

These pointers can help ensure a good night sleep, even when back pain seems impossible to control. To treat and eliminate back pain, visit a chiropractor regularly.
