Any dog owner knows how tough it is to resist the pleading eyes of your four-legged friend, watching you eat and begging for a taste. When you are enjoying a holiday meal, the temptation to treat them, in the spirit of the season, can be even greater. However, some human-friendly foods can send dogs to the animal hospital with severe pain. Here are five dishes to keep them away from.

What Holiday Food Is Unsafe for Your Dog

1. Stuffing

Stuffing has many ingredients that can prove hazardous. Onions contain N-propyl disulfide, a substance that causes a breakdown of red blood cells and causes so-called toxic anemia. Sage, meanwhile, can upset the lining of the stomach and lead to gastrointestinal issues.

2. Xylitol-Based Sweets

This sugar substitute is found in an array of holiday treats, from sugar-free cupcakes to cookies and mints. However, it is toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause dangerous seizures, liver failure, and hypoglycemia.

3. Meat Bones

This can result in internal bleeding requiring surgery at an animal hospital. Dispose of table scraps properly so canines can’t get to them.

4. Alcohol

Make sure adult beverages are kept out of dogs’ reach, especially if you are hosting cocktail parties where guests may put their glasses down on low tables. Since their bodies are smaller than people’s, dogs are more susceptible to alcohol’s effects and are, therefore, quicker to experience alcohol poisoning. If you notice your pet acting strangely, bring them to an animal hospital right away.

5. Chocolate

Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine. While humans are able to metabolize it, dogs’ bodies can’t break it down as quickly. As a result, they may experience chocolate toxicity, which can lead to potentially fatal symptoms like seizures and kidney failure.

While you shouldn’t let your dog indulge in festive foods meant for humans, you can still get them some special holiday treats.
