Choosing a final resting place for yourself or a loved one is challenging. Mausoleums have become more common in recent years, offering customizable commemoration for one or more family members. If you're unfamiliar with this method of memorial monument, the following guide will help you develop a better understanding of your options.

4 Mausoleum FAQ

What is a mausoleum?

A mausoleum is an above-ground burial structure. Typically crafted from granite, the memorial formation houses one or more crypts, which entomb individual caskets. The building can be constructed on private property or a cemetery plot with both options including nameplates, personalization, and the option for decorative features.

Is it private?

Some cemeteries provide community mausoleums, which offer individual crypts for purchase. Many individuals, however, choose to build a private structure. For the latter option, you can choose personal arrangements with single or double spaces; or, opt for large family units with room for multiple crypts.

What styles are available?

mausoleumThere are two main construction styles available — sepulcher and vestibule. Vestibule structures are designed to create a walk-in, indoor area where visitors can enter into a private setting. Sepulcher mausoleums, on the other hand, are composed of outward-facing crypts that are placed side-by-side or stacked. Similar arrangements are also available for private urn placement, which are known as columbariums.

What are the size options?

Private mausoleums are custom-crafted for your needs. While walk-in options vary drastically by design, sepulcher-style monuments are typically designed with a length between eight and nine feet. The width and height are dependent on the number of crypts, with most units including an outside wall thickness of approximately four inches.
