If you want to get your students engaged in learning, a school trip is an effective way to hold their interest and build enthusiasm. But, many trips you might consider during the spring or fall aren’t as fun in colder weather. Here are some ideas that work all year—and even a few that are best in winter.

Fun Winter School Trips

1. Skating Rink

The local ice rink is the same temperature winter and summer, so if you think your students might enjoy the ice, they should go this winter. It’s also an ideal time to go to an outdoor rink rather than one indoors. This gives you an opportunity to talk about temperature, the laws of motion, or the wide range of sports enjoyed by people across the world.

2. Museum, Planetarium, or Aquarium

This is another indoor school trip option with lots for your students to see and do. Read up on your local establishments—you may find they have a special exhibit or event to celebrate the holidays or new year. A fun idea is to assign an animal or exhibit to each child so they can go on a scavenger hunt for information to report back with.

3. Zoo

This one may be counterintuitive since it’s an outdoor activity. But, many animals behave differently in the cold and snow, becoming more active and interesting to watch. You can talk to your students about the different animals and their habitats as well as how they are affected by cold weather and other factors.

4. Ski Lodge

School TripIf you have a ski lodge within bus-service range, older students will love a day of fun in the snow. This trip may take some extra planning, as kids need to have the right cold weather gear, but it may also be your most exciting and memorable trip of the year. This is an excellent bonding trip for high school freshmen or final hurrah for seniors before they graduate.

5. Greenhouse

A greenhouse doesn’t seem that remarkable in summer when the weather outside is just as warm as inside. It’s much more impressive in the winter, and you’ll be able to explain agricultural techniques, plants from different environments, and how heat and sunlight can be harnessed.
