Whether you want to take a cute picture or include your pet in social activities, dressing your cat or dog up in a costume can be a lot of fun. But since animals can’t communicate like people, it isn’t always easy to tell if your pet is enjoying the outfit or would rather take it off. In celebration of National Dress Up Your Pet Day this Jan. 14, here are a few animal care do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when making fashion choices for your four-legged friend.

Do:

Pay attention to your pet’s body language.

Although animals can’t speak, they can exhibit signs that a costume is too uncomfortable for them. If your pet is anxious, trying to remove the apparel, panting, or aggressive, take them out of the outfit.

Stay near your companion at all times.

Even if your pet is enjoying their new look, they can get stuck if their outfit gets caught on something. To avoid potential hazards like choking, never leave your animal alone in their costume.

Remove choking hazards.

Buttons, googly eyes, and other small accessories may be adorable, but they can present a choking hazard if swallowed by your cat or dog. Remove any items your pet may try to bite off and chew, or avoid them altogether.

Don’t:

Rush into the outfit.

Restrict movement.

Your pet should be able to move about comfortably while wearing their attire. If a costume impedes their movement, makes it hard for them to use the bathroom, or blocks their ears and eyes, look for a more pet-friendly option.

Choose heavy materials.

Bundling your companion up in heavy materials can cause them to overheat and even experience dehydration or heat stroke. Instead, choose costumes made of breathable and lightweight fabrics.
