If you’re watching hockey at a local sports bar, you must know your stuff. Hockey games feature high-flying action, and if you’re not hip to the current terminology, you could miss out on an important development. The following are just a few of the terms you should know.

5 Important Hockey Terms for Watching the Game at a Sports Bar

1. The Blue Line

This is the line that divides the center of the ice (the neutral zone) from either end zone. If a player enters an offensive blue line before the puck does, he is offsides. There are also red lines, which help officials make icing calls.

2. Defenseman

This is the position responsible for keeping opposing players away from the goal. Defensemen are positioned directly in front of the goaltender to counter shots from other players.

3. Penalty Box

A penalty shot is sometimes given to a victim of a penalty, usually when the person is tripped or hit from behind. The player is given a shot at the goal with only the opposing goaltender on the ice.

4. Icing

If the puck is shot across the center red line and the opposing goal line without another player touching it, an icing call may result. Icing leads to a faceoff, during which players resume action in the guilty team’s defending zone.

5. Cross-Checking

This is another type of penalty that involves player aggression. Cross-checking occurs when one player takes the shaft of his stick and pushes it into another player. Both hands must be on the stick at the time for it to be considered cross-checking.
