Winter can take its toll on your energy levels. When chilly weather hits, cozying up indoors is often our first priority, and health and wellness initiatives tend to take a backseat until springtime. Yet, there are still ways to feel energized during this season. Discover some effective strategies for getting an extra boost when the cold weather hits.

How to Increase Energy Levels in the Winter

1. Eat a Healthy Diet

It may be tempting to load up on comfort food, but doing so will cause you to feel more sluggish. On the other hand, nutrient-rich foods give your body the energy it needs to function optimally. In particular, whole grains, fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, and lean protein can support energy levels.

2. Maintain an Exercise Routine

Prioritizing health and wellness is important year-round, but especially in the wintertime. During this season, many people complain they don’t have enough energy to work out. But if you can just push yourself to get up and exercise — even if it’s just for a brisk walk — your tissues will receive more oxygen and nutrients, and you’ll feel more refreshed.

3. Stick With a Set Sleep Schedule

Hitting snooze on cold winter mornings may feel good at the time, but you’re better off sticking to a set sleep schedule. A consistent sleep schedule will be easier to maintain, so try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Aim to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night.

4. Get Out & Socialize

In addition to physical health and wellness, mental health also plays a role in regulating energy levels. Instead of going into hibernation mode this winter, make plans with friends and family members from time to time. Social isolation has been shown to decrease mood and cause tiredness.

5. Give Acupuncture a Try

health and wellnessAcupuncture is a practice that has been used to improve a number of health outcomes for thousands of years. Specifically, it can work to combat fatigue by reducing inflammation, strengthening the immune system, stimulating nerves to release endorphins, and reducing insomnia through melatonin secretion.
