Drinking on the job—or someone showing up for work already drunk—may sound like an irregular occurrence, but it happens more often than most employers realize. Alcoholism affects judgment, which explains why those with the condition might be inclined to show up for work while impaired instead of just calling out sick. If you suspect someone on your staff is under the influence, though, you should not conduct alcohol testing on the spot. To reduce the company's liability, there is a proper way to go about confirming your suspicions.

3 Steps to Take If You Think an Employee Is Under the Influence

1. Document Everything

Before conducting alcohol testing, employers should have cause to believe the individual in question is impaired. Therefore, record any obvious signs, sticking to facts and avoiding conjecture. For example, instead of stating the employee appears to be drunk, write down the specific indications that you witness, like bloodshot eyes, stumbling, or slurred speech.

2. Consult With HR

They will help you determine how best to proceed. If you do not have an HR department, discuss the situation with someone with training identifying impairment and record their statements regarding the employee’s condition, as well.

3. Confront the Employee

Arrange to meet the individual in a calm, private place away from other employees, and bring a witness with you. At this point, you can request alcohol testing. Although the employee has the right to refuse, it could affect his or her employment status, depending on the initial hiring contract.
