Your sink drain may seem like an extension of your disposal system, and it’s only until you face a serious clog that you realize flushing certain items is a mistake. Tossing out foods and materials will ensure your plumbing stays healthy and that you don’t require costly surprise repairs. The smallest foods can cause serious clogs, which is why it’s important to stick with these best practices.

Items to Never Flush Down the Sink

1. Rice & Seeds

Tiny grains of rice may seem safe to flush; however, because they’re starch, they’ll expand once exposed to water. Further down your plumbing system, they can become trapped with other debris and create blockages. Gradually, the pressure will build behind them, which can cause pipes to burst.

plumbingRegardless of where they come from, seeds will also expand in your piping from the water exposure, creating plumbing complications. Always toss them out, or better, plant them in your garden so long as they’re safe for the local ecosystem.

2. Grease

As it enters your plumbing, it’ll thicken and coat the walls of pipes, narrowing the passage. When other food passes, it’ll attach to the grease, creating one or a series of blockages. Grease can be difficult to clean from piping, so always toss it in the trash in a disposable container.

3. Fruit Peels

Whether it’s skin shavings from an apple or orange peels, never flush them down the drain, even if they’re chopped into smaller pieces. Peels take a long time to break down in water and can create clogs as they’re compressed in your plumbing. Be careful of plastic fruit manufacturer stickers, too. They take years to break down and can contribute to blockages.
