One of the most delicate parts of the body, there are many factors that affect your vision, and specifically your eyes. With so much information available, it can be overwhelming figuring out where to start. Fortunately, the best optometrists at Edwin Y. Endo, OD & Associates in Aiea have five easy tips on improving eye health:

  • You Are What You Eat:  From kale to salmon, emerging evidence is showing that a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and whole grains is beneficial for your vision in addition to your overall health. One more reason to listen to Mom when she said, "Eat your veggies!"

  • Sunblock For Your Eyes:  While you may want to bask in the sun this summer, your eyes want some shade, so be sure to slap on some sunglasses. However, not all sunglasses are created equally, as many don't have UVA or UVB protection. Want to pamper your eyes but not bust your bank? Luckily, glasses that adequately protect you from the sun's rays can be found at your local drugstore.
  • Be Proactive: For people who suffer from conditions like eye allergies and glaucoma, screenings are important in preventing irreversible eye damage, which can lead to blindness. An eye exam can detect diabetes as well as other serious issues that are going on in your body.
  • Keep in Contact:  While your child may not want to wear glasses for fear of being teased, there may be benefits to wearing contacts early in life. For kids who deal with myopia or nearsightedness, dual-focus soft contact lenses appear to counteract the effects of nearsightedness by halting eyeball lengthening associated with the disorder.

  • De-Stress: We are in front of screens for much of the day. This undoubtedly puts a strain on your eyes. Due to this, optometrists are recommending the use of stress-relieving lenses, or "reading glasses," which help focus nearby objects—taking unneeded stress off your eyes.
