Learning how to play golf requires an understanding of its basic terminology. If you’ve never stepped onto a course before, it’s understandable that you might not be familiar with the vocabulary used to describe the various equipment and types of shots. Before you step onto the green, peruse this handy guide of some of the game’s most frequently used terms.

The Golf Terms Beginners Should Know

1. Par

Par is the first word that all golfers should understand. It refers to the number of strokes that are expected to complete a single hole, or all the holes on the course. Reaching par is a standard aspiration for golfers, as it means they possess the skills needed to finish a hole within the recommended number of strokes. Common scores include birdie, which refers to one under par, and eagle, or two below par. Bogey refers to one over par; a double is two over.

2. Tee

The golf ball rests on a small peg, usually made with either plastic or wood, that measures between two and three inches tall. It’s pressed into the turf and supports the ball before the golfer hits the first stroke.

3. Fore

Evendale, OH golfYou may occasionally hear “fore!” in the distance. That’s a term used to warn others that a ball is in flight and coming toward a person on the course. You can use it yourself—but if you hear it, move out of the way.

4. Get Up

Another commonly used expression is “get up.” This refers to a golf ball that falls just short of reaching its intended spot on the course. Sometimes the ball ends up in a particularly difficult area—a body of water, for example, or tall grass. In that case, you’d hear “get over.”

5. Ace

Occasionally, a very skilled player will hit the golfing equivalent of a home run or a Hail Mary football pass. It’s known as the ace, or a hole-in-one—the ball lands inside the hole in a single stroke.

6. Mulligan

Mulligans offer players second chances to replay a poorly shot stroke. Although not legal under the game’s official rules, they’re popular among amateur players who aren’t necessarily observing rules by the book.

7. Yips

Even the most avid players may come down with a case of the yips from time to time. The word describes the nerves and wrist spasms that sometimes prevent golfers from hitting effective short putts. It’s sometimes associated with anxiety over successfully completing the hole.
