Your gums are the foundation of oral health. Think about it: Just beneath them are hypersensitive tooth nerve endings, but food particles get trapped in them every day, wearing them away and leading to conditions like gingival recession (receding gums) and periodontal disease. When left unchecked, these are leading causes of nerve exposure, and, ultimately, tooth death. No wonder dentists are always telling people to floss!

The office of Dr. Robert Petrtyl in Cincinnati, OH wants to remind you that even if you missed out on good oral hygiene in the past, there is still time now. When combined with proper gum disease treatment, the following cosmetic dentistry procedures perform the double function of improving your teeth's appearance and protecting your gums:

  • Bonding: This procedure fills small cavities between teeth, removing gaps in your smile, and protecting exposed roots. With proper dental care and maintenance, tooth bonding can last for several years. It is usually cheaper than veneers or crowns.
  • Veneers: These are porcelain(best), or composite (tooth colored fillings) which can be used to cover the front sides of teeth to improve spacing and coloration. They can also protect exposed roots.
  • Bridges and Crowns: These procedures often work in tandem and involve replacing missing teeth and cementing teeth with caps, respectively. Crowns, which are more expensive than veneers, cover the entire tooth and are often used to protect teeth that have been worn down, broken, or affected by root canals. Bridges are fixed foundations for false teeth: the whole structure consists of one or more false teeth, which are anchored to crowns placed on each of the teeth on either side. They're like permanent dentures.

All of these procedures require regular teeth cleanings and maintenance, at home and in office, to ensure their longevity. For more information or to set up an appointment, call Dr. Robert Petrtyl's office at (513) 554-4657.
