If you're learning how to drive, adding other components to the experience—from the radio to lively passengers—may seem out of the question at the time. However, it’s important to be prepared for obstacles that may hinder your safety or performance on the road, especially when it comes to weather. While you won’t have any control over when it snows this season, you can use the following driver’s ed tips to stay safe and confident behind the wheel.

Do:

Make sure the fuel tank is half full.

When driving in the snow, there is a higher risk that you’ll get stuck in the subpar weather, either due to poor visibility or in an accident. Something as simple as skidding on a slippery section of the road and winding up in a ditch warrants a call to roadside assistance. In such situations, you’ll need the car to stay on so you can stay warm, so always keep your tank at least half full.

Pack an emergency kit.

Should an accident occur, your saving grace may be a thoughtfully packed emergency kit in the glove compartment or truck. While this should contain practical tools, like jumper cables, flashlights, and flares, you might also want to pack bandages, snacks, and water bottles for the sake of self-care.

Don’t:

Forget to remove snow on the windows and roof.

driver's edWhile your car might look ready to drive once the windshield is clear, it’s crucial to remove all snow and ice from the windows and roof. Otherwise, you won’t be able to use the back windows or the rear-view mirror to check your blind spots. Plus, snow could fall from the roof to the windshield while you’re driving, blocking your view.

Leave your cell phone behind.

You were probably made well aware of the dangers of distracted driving in your driver’s ed course, but it’s crucial to keep these warnings fresh in your mind even once the instructor has left the car. However, you should always have your cell phone in your pocket or the console of the car, so you can call for help in a snow-related emergency.
