Moving house can be a real hassle, especially if you have large and unwieldy objects to transport. For instance, a big fish tank is an awkward combination of weight and fragility. That, plus the need to keep the fish alive, can make for a difficult move, especially if you haven't hired professional movers. Here are some tips for packing and moving a large aquarium.

How to Move an Oversized Fish Tank

1. Pack Fish Last & Unpack Them First

Change a portion of the water every day for a week before the move to ensure it's clean. Stop feeding the fish two days before to ensure it's crystal clear. Pack the fish in plastic pet store bags filled 1/3 with aquarium water. Keep the bags in a covered cooler—the dark will help minimize trauma to the fish. If you have too many fish to pack conveniently in bags, use clean, half-filled plastic buckets with lids. If the trip will last more than an hour, stop by a nearby pet store and ask them to fill the containers with oxygen to help the water stay oxygenated on the road.

2. Remove Contents

Remove decorations, pumps, hoses, and lights. Dry everything as well as you can and wrap in newspaper or bubble wrap. Pack all fish-related items together so you have no trouble finding them after the move.

3. Discard Excess Water & Sand

Pour out the rest of the water and store any sand or gravel in the bottom in a lidded bucket. Do not leave the gravel in the tank, because the additional weight could cause the glass to crack during transport. Clean and dry the sides and bottom of the tank thoroughly with a soft cloth and gentle cleanser.

4. Protect Tank

Movers in Rochester, NYCover the tank with at least two layers of protective materials. Large, puffy bubble wrap makes a good inner layer, while a thick blanket or two makes an effective outer one. These should help protect against cracks during the trip.

5. Ask for Help

For large tanks, don't attempt the move on your own. Ask family, friends, or movers to help so you don't accidentally drop it. Keep it as level as possible, both while you're carrying it and during transport in the truck. Carrying it or setting it on an angle could result in it sliding off.
