As the end of the year approaches, many people are driving or flying to meet loved ones near and far. This is a time when your immune system can come under a lot of strain with all the new people and places you encounter. To avoid an illness that could ruin your holiday, take these precautions.

How to Avoid Illness While Traveling

1. Get Vaccinated

Before you go anywhere, see your doctor for this year’s flu shot and any boosters you’re due to receive. If you’re leaving the country, make sure your doctor knows where you’re going and inoculates you against any diseases that might be a problem at your destination.

2. Wash Your Hands

IllnessWhile you’re out and about, wash your hands frequently, especially after touching fixtures like door handles. You can then avoid transferring germs from these surfaces to your face. Also, carry and use hand sanitizer.

3. Choose a Window Seat

If you’re flying, the seats furthest from the aisle are the ones touched by the least number of other passengers. By booking a window seat, you minimize the potential of trading germs with everyone who moves down the aisle.

4. Wipe Down the Area

When you first get to your seat, use a disinfecting wipe to clean the armrest, tray table, wall, and any plastic or vinyl parts. If the passenger before you was ill, you can eliminate most of their germs before you sit down.

5. Take Care of Your Body

Because you’ll be under stress while traveling, give your immune system a boost. Take vitamins and drink lots of water, and make sure you’re getting adequate sleep. While you’re on vacation, you should also schedule some light exercise—getting fresh air and increasing your circulation both help your immune system.
