Hearing loss not only affects those who suffer from it, but the people who wish to communicate with them as well. It can be challenging to successfully hold a conversation with a senior who has difficulty hearing. However, whether you’re a family member or in charge of providing elder care services, it’s important to set your own frustration aside and do your best. Here are a few tips for communicating more effectively with someone who has poor hearing.

How to Communicate With Hearing Impaired Seniors

1. Prepare to Have a Conversation

Before attempting to start a conversation with a senior who has hearing loss, make sure you have their full attention. Let them know what the topic of discussion will be so it’s easier for them to follow along. It’s also best to eliminate as much background noise as possible. The TV, radio, fans, and traffic can all hinder their ability to understand what you’re saying. Additionally, avoid standing in lighting that makes it hard for them to read your lips.

2. Carefully Consider Your Way of Speaking

While you may talk a little louder than normal, you don’t want to shout or use exaggerated mouth movements. This will only distort the sound of what you’re saying. Move your lips at a reasonable speed, enunciate your words, and don’t hide your mouth or eat as you’re talking.

3. Be Patient

Finally, remain as patient as possible. Put yourself in their shoes and try to imagine what it must feel like dealing with hearing loss. If you’re having trouble getting your message across, rephrase your words into shorter, simpler statements. Repeat yourself and confirm the person actually got what you were saying, especially if it’s in reference to their elder care services, to avoid a misunderstanding about something important.
