The protective enamel on children's teeth isn't as strong and sturdy as it is in adult mouths. Because kids are more sensitive to tooth decay, dentists recommend extra care, vigilance, and regular brushing and flossing. Here’s a brief guide on what parents should know about tooth decay in children.

Symptoms

The most obvious signs of decay are toothache pain and noticeably discolored teeth. More subtle red flags include sensitivity to hot or cold foods. Trouble chewing could also mean a cavity, as can red or swollen gums.

Routinely check in with your child about their teeth. Ask them how their mouth is feeling, if they have any pain, or if they've noticed any unusual sensations or feelings in their teeth or gums. With younger kids, you may have to do an occasional visual inspection to ensure everything looks normal and healthy inside the mouth.

Prevention

dentistProper dental care habits start at home, so implement brushing and flossing as early as possible. Your kid should brush and floss at least twice a day, ideally first thing in the morning and right before bedtime. Demonstrate proper technique as well. Apply gentle pressure with the toothbrush head and use back and forth strokes over the surface of every tooth. Slide floss in between each tooth, make a C shape around the tooth, and gingerly move the floss up and down, being careful not to snap it in or out.

Additionally, all children should visit a dentist at least twice a year for best preventative maintenance. A dentist will provide routine care, X-rays, fluoride treatments, and any necessary restorative work. They will also keep tabs on potential issues before they start and educate your child on the best ways to prevent problem areas from becoming serious oral health concerns.
