Alaska offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, so it's no wonder that it's become a tourism hub. One of the most popular destinations in the state is the Denali National Park and Preserve. The location offers easy viewing access to hundreds of species of wildlife in their natural habitat. If you're planning a trip to the national park, here are the five creatures you won't want to miss.

5 Majestic Creatures to See In-Person at Denali National Park & Preserve

1. Birds

Denali National Park is the top tourism spot for bird watchers. With over 160 species in the area, it's impossible to narrow it down to just one must-see type. From the mountaintops to the rivers and streams, there are different species in every area of the preserve. Some of the most notable are the golden eagle, northern hawk owl, and long-tailed jaegers.

2. Caribou

tourismWeighing upwards of 130 lbs. and sporting three-feet antlers, caribou are sure to take your breath away. There are 1,500 caribous in the park, but they typically roam in small herds. Keep an eye out for them around the river basins where the lushest foliage is present.

3. Grizzly Bears

Where there are caribous, grizzly bears aren't far behind. They're typically found near water or following animal herds into the passes. If grizzly bears are on your must-see list, it's best to stick to the park's bus tour on Denali Park Road to avoid meeting one too up close and personal.

4. Dall Sheep

Dall sheep are known for their incredible climbing talents — often making their way up and down vertical cliffsides. If you want to catch a closer look at the herds, prepare to grab your hiking boots. They tend to stick to higher elevations, like the ridges above Igloo Canyon and on Mount Margaret, but luckily, they're out and about 12 months per year.

5. Collared Pika

The small mammals aren't native to the lower 48 states, so a visit to Denali may be your only chance to see the collared pika in person. They're active year-round, so visitors have a chance to see them regardless of the season. Since they prefer the rocky terrain of the mountainside, bring a pair of binoculars to catch them from the bus.
