Often, women worry about their ability to get routine health exams like mammograms if they have undergone reconstructive or cosmetic procedures that involve breast implants. However, mammograms are still an effective and recommended test for women who have implants. Here is a little more about what to expect if you get a mammogram with breast implants.

What Should I Expect During My Mammogram?

mammogramMammograms for breast implant recipients are very similar to typical mammograms, although the technician may take additional images so radiologists can see around the implant. After you undress from the waist up and change into a medical gown, you will be asked to stand in front of the mammogram machine and place your breast onto a special formed plate. Next, the technician closes a second plate gently around your breast, slightly compressing the tissue to pave the way for diagnostic imaging.

Are Any Extra Steps Required?

While it is possible for implants to rupture during mammography, it is important to share as much information about your implants as possible with your technician and doctor. Before you attend your mammography appointment, talk with your previous surgeon’s office to find out what kind of implants you have. Sharing this information with your technician can help them to gather better images, improving the efficacy of your test.

During the mammogram, the technician will take two extra images of each breast with an implant. The purpose of these additional images is to check for issues like displacement, contracture, and lesions that may be hidden by the implant.
