On a beautiful, sunny day, nothing beats taking a dip in a cool, refreshing swimming pool. Enjoying clean and sanitized water also provides peace of mind. A pool’s filter is designed to get rid of dirt and debris, but how do you know if the device is really working? Here’s a helpful guide on what to look for when it comes to properly-working swimming pool filters.

How to Know If Your Swimming Pool Filter Works

Try the Vacuum Test

One surefire way to test your filter’s capability is by using a vacuum. A swimming pool technician connects a special vacuum and hose to the skimmer suction port. Once it’s turned on, they will look for any signs of cloudy water coming from the return or jet components.swimming pool filter

Add DE Powder

Another way to test your swimming pool filter is by adding some diatomaceous earth, also known as DE, to the filter. The powdery substance contains natural materials that perform similar to a sponge. The DE absorbs any dirt and debris in the filter and then sifts them out through the pool’s skimmer box.

After adding the powder, watch the pool’s jets or returns for signs of cloudy water coming in. If any is present, the filter may not be working properly. Be advised that technicians advise against adding DE to cartridge filters because the powder may cause damage to the device’s fabric components.

Check for Leaks

All of your pool’s components work together to flush out contaminants and prevent leaks. Over time, gaskets can deteriorate and cause dirt and debris to flow in the wrong direction and into the pool’s water. Have your swimming pool filter periodically checked for leaks to ensure all components are working properly.
