Festive candy canes can be used for everything from Christmas tree decorations to stocking stuffers or stand-alone tokens of appreciation. Given their versatility, it’s no surprise that these minty treats are ubiquitous during the holidays. Candy canes pose unique dental dangers, however, like cavities and enamel damage. Follow these snacking do’s and don’ts to protect your smile.

Do:

Limit your consumption.

When there is a big bowl of goodies in the office or your home, it can be easy to absentmindedly snack on candy canes all day. This allows a constant layer of sugar to coat your teeth, however, attracting the bacteria that cause cavities. Save sweets exclusively for dessert.

Do brush your teeth after.

imageOnce you’ve sated your sugar cravings, take the time to brush and floss your teeth. If you’re on the go and don’t have your oral hygiene tools with you, rinse with water to help get rid of sugar. Eating a plain apple can also help, as chewing the fruit provides a kind of scrubbing effect.

Don’t:

Bite down on candies.

Always suck – don’t bite – hard candies. Biting can actually damage enamel, the protective coating that covers your teeth. When enamel erodes, you become more susceptible to cavities. With time, the yellow-colored dentin underneath the enamel may even become visible, making for an unsightly smile.

Don’t delay treatment if problems arise.

Maybe you weren’t paying attention and bit down on a candy cane, damaging your brackets – or perhaps you’ve had a toothache for days on end. When you notice signs of trouble, don’t wait to get treatment. Oral health problems get worse with time. Early-stage cavities only require fillings, for example, but if they aren’t treated promptly, they may demand a root canal.
