Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are bacterial infections that affect the urinary system, including bladder, kidneys and urethra. While temporary, UTIs can be uncomfortable and painful, requiring regular visits to the gynecologist. While one out of every five women will experience a UTI once in their lifetime, there are ways to prevent this issue. To improve your health, consider embracing these OB-GYN-approved tips.

4 Tips for Preventing UTIs

1. Stay Hydrated

GynecologistIt’s essential to stay hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water per day. Drinking water regularly flushes your urinary tract and eliminates bacteria. Keep a water bottle handy at all times to maintain a healthy bladder.

2. Be Mindful of Bacteria

One of the major culprits responsible for UTIs is E. coli, bacteria that are present in the intestines and anus. It’s imperative to maintain healthy habits during bowel movements by wiping front to back. This prevents the spread of bacteria from one area to the other.

3. Don’t Hold It

When bacteria are present in your urinary tract, waiting too long between bathroom breaks allows time for these unwanted invaders to thrive and grow. Empty your bladder, especially after sexual activity, as it’s common for bacteria to transfer into the vaginal area from a partner. By relieving yourself when you need to and immediately after intercourse, you’ll reduce the odds of infection.

4. Talk to Your Gynecologist

Some women are prone to recurring UTIs. If you often experience cloudy urine, pelvic pain, a burning sensation when you urinate, and the need to relieve yourself frequently, schedule an appointment at a gynecological care clinic. These medical professionals will have the tools to help treat your symptoms, and if it’s a recurring issue, a gynecologist can help mediate the problem.
