Gymnastics is often perceived as a sport that must be started young. After all, when we watch Olympians compete at the age of 16, it’s no surprise why some people think the sport is reserved for children and adolescents. But, unless you’re competing for an Olympic medal, it’s never too late to embrace your inner gymnast. Find out how the sport can benefit people of all ages, below.

A Guide to Practicing Gymnastics as an Adult

What Are the Benefits of Adult Gymnastics?

Many adults structure their fitness programs around cardio activities, such as running or cycling. While these exercises support heart health and can aid in weight management, a robust fitness regimen should also encompass resistance training, balance, and flexibility. Gymnastics satisfies all three of these areas.

Adult gymnasts build upper and lower body strength using equipment like parallel bars and still rings. You can also engage in floor exercises, working your way up to movements like supported handstands as you grow stronger. Balance is tested and improved with the balance beam, while flexibility develops with every class, too. Stretching is built into every session to support joint mobility and range of motion while preventing injuries.

How Can I Practice Safely?

gymnasticsIn addition to thorough warm-ups, gymnastic instructors minimize the risk of injuries by structuring classes based on participants’ fitness levels. You won’t be expected to perform a back handspring on your first class. Instead, you will engage in appropriately challenging exercises, and progress gradually over time.

There are other safety mechanisms in place to reduce the risk of injury, too. For one, instructors can spot you through challenging exercises, providing support and a sense of security. For another, you can master challenging moves on the trampoline first to build confidence before trying them out on the floor. Finally, gyms are outfitted with plenty of mats to ease any blow in the event you do fall, where you’ll find that getting up and trying again isn’t so bad.
