Concrete is one of the most popular materials used to build driveways, walkways, and patios. However, freezing temperatures and snow can cause concrete to crack and chip. Here are some guidelines to help you protect your concrete surface from damage this winter.

3 Winter Tips for Concrete

1. Avoid Using Salt

patioSodium chloride, or rock salt, is used in the winter to melt ice on roads and sidewalks. When the salt is absorbed into the concrete, however, it will refreeze and expand, leading to crumbling and cracking. The chemicals may also cause surface discoloration. Avoid alternative de-icing products such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, as these are also damaging to concrete.

2. Remove Snow

Shovels and snow blowers are the safest way to remove ice and snow from a driveway or patio without damaging the concrete. Get started on removal as soon as the snow has finished falling to prevent the moisture from refreezing. As an added safety measure, spread regular sand over the area to improve traction on slippery surfaces.

3. Apply a Sealant

Before the temperatures drop, hire a professional to apply a sealant over your concrete surfaces. This creates a barrier that will prevent water from entering through the cracks and expanding, which is the underlying cause of corrosion. Sealants also extend the lifespan of the concrete.
