How Long Will a Kitchen Remodeling Project Take?, Brighton, New York

Kitchen remodeling is an exciting project. While the end result is well worth the expense, the entire process can take longer than many homeowners realize. That’s why it’s important to plan ahead and have a realistic time-frame for completion. Here is an overview of the kitchen remodeling process and how long each stage can take.

What You Should Know About the Kitchen Remodeling Timeline

The design is the initial stage of a kitchen remodeling project and typically takes about one to two weeks. The homeowner will discuss their wants and needs with a designer during a consultation, and the professional will take measurements to create the design and layout for the new kitchen.

Before demolition can begin, the contractor must order the materials, cabinetry, and fixtures from the manufacturer. Depending on the grade of the products, this process can take anywhere from three to 12 weeks. Stock items take about a month to come in, while custom products can take up to 12 weeks.

Demolition takes a few days and should begin after all of the fixtures arrive to minimize kitchen downtime. This includes the removal of the flooring, cabinets, fixtures, and appliances. After the kitchen has been removed, the next step is to install the plumbing and electric systems, which can take an additional week.

Drywall & Flooring

kitchen remodelingFloor installation and painting is done before cabinetry installation. Painting the ceiling and walls will take a couple of days. The type of flooring you choose will also impact the timeline; hardwood and tile flooring can take up to a week, while vinyl flooring only takes a few days.

Cabinetry & Appliances

The last stage is to install the cabinetry, countertops, and appliances. Natural stone countertops must be fabricated, which can delay the final process by an additional two weeks. The final plumbing fixtures,  appliances, and if desired, tile backsplash are the last things installed, and the process could take up to a week.
