Quality sleep is essential for your body’s health and overall wellbeing. A lack of proper sleep can lead to fatigue, forgetfulness, irritability, and other problematic symptoms. If you’re tossing and turning on your mattress throughout the night or waking up unrested, follow these tips to get a deeper sleep.

How to Sleep More Soundly at Night

1. Check Your Mattress

The first thing you should do if you’re struggling to sleep is check the condition of your mattress. It should be firm enough to support your body and free of lumps or springs that could press on nerves while you’re sleeping. Excessive stains, signs of mold, and holes or tears are bad signs as well, irritating your sinuses and allowing contaminants and insects to get inside. The age of your mattress should also be considered. A high-quality one may last up to 10 years, but one of poor quality may only last two to three. If your mattress is dated, lumpy, moldy, stained, or in otherwise poor condition, you should purchase a new one.

2. Watch What You Eat

mattressYour diet will affect the quality of sleep you get, too. To aid digestion and allow your body to fall into deep sleep, avoid eating within in the two to three hours before you go to bed. If your body is still trying to digest food, you won’t get as restful of sleep. You should also limit your caffeine intake, especially before bed. Chocolate, coffee, tea, sodas, energy drinks, and more all have caffeine in them, which can interfere with your ability to sleep soundly.

3. Release Tension & Energy

Holding in tension or excess energy will also inhibit your nightly zzz’s, making it difficult to fall asleep and preventing you from sleeping deeply. Begin a new nighttime routine to help you unwind, and stick to it, doing it at the same time every night if possible. Drinking caffeine-free teas, listening to calming music, reading a book, taking a bath, or meditating are all good ways to relax at the end of the day. Use essential oils — such as lavender — to induce sleepiness. You should also increase your daily exercise to vent pent-up energy, allowing your body to relax and be naturally tired at the end of the day.
