Tennis is a fantastic sport for people of all ages, but playing without the proper precautions can put you at risk of arm, ankle, and back injuries. With the right preparation, you can minimize your chances of injury and enjoy staying fit. Here are three steps for safely playing tennis.

How to Avoid Injury While Playing Tennis

1. Stretch Before & After

Heading into practice or a competitive match with cold muscles is a sure way to increase your risk of injury. Before you engage in any activity, take ten minutes to stretch and limber up your legs, arms, and torso. Afterward, another ten minutes of stretching can return muscles to their original length and prevent soreness from the exercise.

2. Don’t Push Yourself Too Hard

tennisYour body has limits, especially if you’re new to the sport. As you get tired, your form gets more sloppy, and your likelihood of strains or repetitive stress injuries increases. If you notice yourself getting tired or feel pain in your arms, back, or ankles, it’s time to rest. If you don’t feel up to getting back on the court, that’s fine. Taking things slowly will keep your body safe so you can keep enjoying tennis as part of your normal routine.

3. Use the Right Technique

During a match of tennis, you’ll be using the same motions over and over, so proper form is critical to prevent injuries. One of the most common injuries that result from poor backhand is tennis elbow, a strain in the tendons of your elbow. To correct your form, study professional players, work with a coach, and keep practicing the proper motions.
