When you own one or more motorcycles, there may come a time when you need a motorcycle trailer to transport your bikes and accessories as you move your ride over long distances. Choosing the right ones include figuring out a few important details for your situation. Below are five tips to get started.

How to Select a Motorcycle Trailer

1. Number of Bikes

Before settling on a motorcycle trailer, figure out how many bikes will need to fit inside. If the number will vary, pick a trailer rental or purchase that will accommodate the maximum possibility. If you go larger, you know for sure you are covered at all times.

2. Towing Vehicle Capacity

You must understand how much the towing vehicle can safely haul, which is included in most manuals. The car or truck that will be hitched must be able to move the trailer weight in addition to the number of motorcycles and accessories inside. Finally, don’t forget tongue weight, which is the force that the tongue of the trailer puts on the hitch as it is connected to the towing vehicle.

3. Trailer Weight

Heavier GVW trailers are not necessarily what you may need. There are many motorcycle trailers available that are lighter, but durable and capable of holding considerable cargo. Smith Trailers and Equipment can help you determine the GVW of the trailer that's right for you.

4. Design Features

Special features can make travel and storage easier. Options, such as guides and ramps for driving the bike into the trailer, are particularly helpful for larger motorcycles.  Another option that you should consider is a roof vent or side wall vents if considering an enclosed trailer.  This helps to ventilate the trailer and minimize gas fumes. Flush locks on the side door will allow you to lock the door from the inside.  This is necessary if on occasion on a long trip you decide to sleep in the trailer.

5. Safety Components

Choose motorcycle trailers that have lights and tie-down spots to secure every bike. This ensures your ride stays in place as it travels. It won’t shift or fall when jostled over rough terrain or at different vehicle speeds.   Front wheel chocks, “D” rings, E-Track, axle straps, soft touch handle bar straps are just a few additional accessories that may be helpful in keeping your cargo safe and your trip worry free.
