Walk-in closets are a fabulous luxury. Whether you have a small collection or numerous pieces, the organization and comfort they provide are well worth the investment. If you’re looking to build a custom closet or upgrade your current setup, you may want to consider an island. Here’s what you should know about this feature.

A Guide to Walk-In Closet Islands

What Is a Closet Island?

Closet islands, similar to kitchen ones, are a fixture in the middle of a walk-in closet. Most contain drawers for additional storage space. You can also add seating, a mirror, and other customizations to make the most of your space.

How Do You Know If You Can Fit One?

walk-in closetNot all walk-in closets are created equal; some are significantly roomier than others. Typically, closet islands are at least 30 inches deep, though the width varies depending on the features you select. You’ll also need at least six inches of space around the island to walk around it comfortably or more if you plan to add seating. Measure your walk-in to ensure there is at least 36 inches of space in the middle to accommodate an island.

What Are the Benefits?

Walk-in closets offer significantly more storage space than traditional closets. They’re also more comfortable and convenient, allowing you to organize your items and provide room for dressing. Closet islands enhance the space by adding more storage space and making it easier to organize.

Depending on the features you desire, you can also use an island to create a full dressing room experience with a mirror and seating. The counter-top is a fantastic space for dressing, folding, or packing, as well as storing items such as purses and jewelry. The drawers provide ample space to store other accessories or socks and undergarments.
