A quality education is one of the best gifts you can give a child. And although school officially starts in kindergarten, many parents enroll their children in pre-K programs to set a solid foundation for academic success. If you’re considering enrolling your little one in pre-K, here are some answers to a few frequently asked questions.

General Pre-K FAQ

What are the benefits of pre-K?

Early childhood education has several benefits, including fostering healthy emotional and social development. This includes academic preparation, ensuring children have the fundamental knowledge necessary to succeed in their first year of school. But also, pre-K prepares children for the structure and social environment of a kindergarten classroom. Altogether, kids who attend pre-K tend to be more comfortable and confident on their first day of kindergarten.

How do kids qualify for the Georgia Lottery pre-K program?

The Georgia Lottery Pre-K is a state lottery-funded educational program designed to prepare four-year-olds for entry into kindergarten. Programs may be offered at both private and public child care centers. Children must be age four on or before Sept. 1 of the current school year to qualify. Many pre-K academies give priority to children who are already enrolled in and attending early childhood education programs at the school. Other kids are admitted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Pre-K Facility FAQ

How long have you been in business?

While experience isn’t everything, it does help, particularly when it comespreK to childcare. When a school has been in business for several years, it typically indicates they’ve earned an excellent reputation in the community. Similarly, teachers who have had more experience generally are more adept. Schools with more extensive experience also tend to be better at recognizing kids’ needs and handling challenging situations.

How big are classes?

While actual class sizes can vary depending on overall enrollment, the typical maximum classroom size is 22 children, with a student-teacher ratio of about 10 or 11 to one. However, in addition to the licensed and certified early childhood educator, classrooms are also manned by assistant teachers and other adult helpers who ensure every student receives individualized attention.
