A pressure system inspection is an important part of water well maintenance. There are many different components to wells, and they must all function optimally to ensure your property has continuous access to clean water. The following information explains how pressure systems work and why routine inspections are so important.

What Is a Pressure System?

A water pump is responsible for bringing water from the ground and into your home. When water pressure dips below a certain level, the submersible pump kicks on, which helps ferry water into your home. In this case, water is taken into the pressure tank, where the air is compressed until it reaches a specified level. This air pressure pushes water from the tank into the home when the faucet is turned on, and pressure builds to the default level when the faucet is turned off.

How Will I Know My System Needs Service?

There are a few signs to look for if you think you need water well maintenance. For instance, a constantly cycling pump causes motor burnout. This happens when air pressure is not kept at a consistent level. With a submersible pump, a clicking sound often accompanies the pump turning on and off. Accordingly, if you hear a continuous clicking, you may need service for your pressure tank. However, it can be tough to determine the real cause without a thorough inspection.

What Happens During an Inspection?

Water Well MaintenanceDuring a pressure system inspection, your well-drilling contractor will look at how long it takes for the pump to turn on. While running water, the pressure gauge is observed until it reaches the lowest setting. At this point, the water will be turned off, and the gauge will begin to go up again until it reaches the highest point. How long this process takes is a good indication of issues, such as a ruptured bladder. Durations shorter than a minute or so usually indicate that there is a problem.
