Your swimming pool provides good times and great memories throughout the warm parts of the year, but once cold weather descends, it’s important to keep it protected. While some pool owners just pull out the cover and don’t give maintenance another thought, taking additional steps will keep your pool in better shape for spring. Here are a few pointers.

How to Take Care of Your Swimming Pool All Winter

1. Apply Chemicals Regularly

When you first close the pool down, you’ll need to dose it with chemicals to prevent algae growth. Once isn’t enough, however: the chemicals only last for about two months, so you’ll need to reapply them at least once more during the winter. While cold weather may keep algae from growing, it will thrive during any warm spells; regular chemical doses serve as a contingency against this.

2. Protect the Pool Cover

But while your cover protects the pool, what protects the cover? You can protect it by periodically clearing off any leaves and dirt that have settled on it and by using a sump pump or wet-dry vacuum to get rid of puddles. But be careful—if there’s ice involved, wait until it thaws, as even a sliver of ice can tear your cover and result in an expensive repair job.

3. Hire a Cleaning Service as Needed

Even when you use a cover, it’s impossible to keep the swimming pool totally gunk-free. To protect it, hire a service to clean it out at least once during the winter. Trained professionals will be able to do a more thorough job than you could on your own, and they’ll alert you of any other maintenance issues that need to be taken care of so that you’ll be ready to dive in once warmth comes back into the world.
