Knowing your skin type is essential for proper care. While it’s common to deal with dryness in the winter and oily skin in the summer, figuring out your skin type can help you choose the right products and schedule an appointment with the right aesthetician to combat these seasonal issues. Here are a few common skin types and how to care for them.

Your Guide to Common Skin Types

1. Normal

Normal skin is smooth and mostly clear. This skin type also features small pores, an even tone, and only experiences seasonal flakiness or oiliness. A cleanser, a once-a-week exfoliator, regular visits to an aesthetician who specializes in skin care, and daytime and nighttime moisturizers will cover the basic care needed for this skin type.

2. Oily

Avoid acne treatments containing benzoyl peroxide as this can damage your skin. Opt for salicylic acid, which is a natural exfoliate that will remove blockages from the pores to prevent breakouts.

3. Dry

Dry skin feels tight and has invisible pores. It may also feature red patches and flakiness due to factors such as irritation, hormonal changes, and dry conditions in the winter. Use a rich facial moisturizer after cleaning to hydrate the skin, and shorten the time you spend in the shower.

4. Combination

Combination skin refers to a combination of both dry and oily skin symptoms. You may experience oiliness on the nose and forehead, and dry patches on other areas of the face. Use a moisturizer that prevents oily and dry skin to treat the problem areas on your face. Exfoliate at least once a week to unclog the pores.

5. Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can display characteristics of any of the above skin types. This skin type gets irritated and red when exposed to chemical treatments. Its symptoms can also be caused by conditions such as allergies or rosacea. Avoid products that trigger breakouts and irritation, and apply sunscreen on a daily basis.
